Smith County EMS strives to provide optimal emergency medical care to the citizens of Smith County and those who travel through the county.
Levels of Certification
FR=First Responders: (Listed below are a few authorized activities and educational requirements) *Airway management, CPR, Oxygen therapy, AED use, Fracture Management, Wound care... *Approximately 1,100 certified in Kansas.
*Education requirements are from 45-80 hours for initial course of instruction (Approximately three months in duration)
*To maintain certification requires a minimum of 8 hours yearly of specified continuing education hours approved by Kansas Board of EMS, taught by individuals approved by KBEMS.
EMT=Emergency Medical Technician: (Listed below are a few authorized activities and educational requirements)
*Airway management, CPR, Oxygen therapy, AED use, Fracture Management, Monitor IV, Wound care...
*Approximately 6,050 certified in Kansas.
*Education requirements are for 120-200 hours for initial course of instruction. (Approximately six months in duration)
*To maintain certification requires a minimum of 14 hours yearly of specified continuing education hours approved by Kansas Board of EMS, taught by individuals approved by KBEMS.
EMT-I=EMT-Intermediate: (Listed below are a few authorized activities and educational requirements)
*Airway Management, CPR, Oxygen therapy, AED use, Fracture Management, IV therapy, Wound care..
*Approximately 1,057 certified in Kansas.
*Education requirements are from 40-60 hours for initial course of instruction. (Approximately three months in duration)
*To maintain certification requires a minimum of 18 hours yearly of specified continuing education hours approved by Kansas Board of EMS, taught by individuals approved by KBEMS.
EMT-D=EMT-Defibrillator: (Listed below are a few authorized activities and educational requirements)
*Airway Management, CPR, Oxygen therapy, EKG (heart monitor), Defibrillation, Fracture Management, Monitor IV, Wound care...
*Approximately 95 EMT-D and 452 EMT-I-D certified in Kansas.
*Education requirements are from 40-60 hours for initial course of instruction. (Approximately three months in duration)
*To maintain certification requires a minimum of 18 hours yearly of specified continuing education hours approved by Kansas Board of EMS, taught by individuals approved by KBEMS.
MICT=Mobile Intensive Care Technician (Paramedic): (Listed below are a few authorized activities and educational requirements)
*Airway Management (Advanced airways, intubations), CPR, Oxygen therapy, IV therapy, EKG (heart monitor, Cardioversion, Defibrillation, Pacing), Chest decompression, Fracture Management, Other advanced interventions, Administration of medication...
*Approximately 1,890 certified in Kansas.
*Education requirements are from 1,200-2,500 hours for initial course of instruction. (Approximately 2-4 years in duration)
*To maintain certification requires a minimum of 30 hours yearly of specified continuing education hours approved by Kansas Board of EMS, taught by individuals approved by KBEMS.
